The John Wallace Swim School is a family owned swim school and are leaders in Aquatic Education. John Wallace started the John Wallace Swim School in 1977 and sets the benchmark in Aquatic Education with its quality innovative programs.
We have been serving Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast for 40 years and offer lessons to all ages and levels from babies to adults. Our programs have been developed to cater for each individual ability and designed to progress your child through each level up to junior development squads, continuing on to the elite level pool and surf squads.
We are open all year round in our heated pools, with a 2 week break over the Christmas and New Year period.
We start infant swimming lessons for children as young as 2 months old. Children at 2 to 6 months old have better head and neck control allowing for more activities during formal swimming lessons. Learning to swim is a fun, healthy activity but a safety measure as well.
Our babies program is aged based and split into 3 different groups:
2 months old to 7 months old.
Aqua Tots 1
7 months old to 14 months old.
Aqua Tots 2
14 months old to 24 months old (approximately).
water awareness program
Our water awareness classes are specifically designed to develop a confident and independent swimmer whilst being separated by their parent/caregiver before entering our learn to swim program.
Our first class where parents are no longer in the water, focusing on water awareness and confidence. Minimum age for this class is 20 months depending on the ability and swimming experience. Maximum of 3 students per class - parents may sit on the edge of the pool if need be for the first few weeks to help with the separation.
General age is 2.5 years old to 3.5 years old and is more ability based focusing more on independent submersions and survival work.
learn to swim program
There are 6 levels throughout our learn to swim program. Each level focuses on a certain skill and technique for each stroke to ensure that our students progress in a positive and timely manner; this also eliminates them from stagnating by continuing to incorporate new skills to each level.
Strong independent kick without floatation aid, floating, bubbles and breathing.
Freestyle arms with good control and kick, no breathing. Comfortable and confident on front and back.
Independent freestyle with bi-lateral breathing and basic backstroke.
12 metres of controlled freestyle and backstroke.
20 metres of strong and controlled freestyle and backstroke with basic breaststroke kick and butterfly.
35 metres of freestyle and backstroke, 25 metres of breaststroke (with good timing), basic butterfly, freestyle turns and dives.
Our junior squads focus on developing more advanced techniques by introducing competitive strokes and racing skills for all 4 strokes in a squad environment. By moving into a bigger squad, our students are encouraged to become more aware of not only their own individual progression but embracing teamwork.
This is a 45 minute Stroke Correction squad held in our outdoor heated 25m pool. Fine tuning all 4 strokes, starts and finishes whilst increasing endurance.
This hour long squad focuses on endurance and speed. Once you reach this level it’s important to try to increase the number of sessions to maintain your fitness.
